VANDA KLEIN
COLOR FIELDS
This multifunctional knitted dress was inspired by a Mark Rothko painting. I chose a piece from the abstract expressionist painter's distinctive 'colour field' works and my aim was to recreate the abstract, minimalist, yet monumental character of the painting as well as its color blocking stripes in a knitted dress. To achieve this, I used yarns of various qualities that are similar to the colors on the painting, and I knitted a tube-like garment made of a single piece that is over three metres long and one metre wide with openings of different sizes on both sides. Following the principle of 'subtraction cutting', the human body can travel through the openings of the garment in several different ways, resulting in this abstract, versatile garment which forms the basis of my six-piece COLOR FIELD knitwear collection.
